American Idol Season Seven: Top 4
We're coming round the final bend and into the home stretch. In last weekend's Kentucky Derby they only euthanized one non-winning participant. In American Idol we do it to all the losers - albeit only metaphorically. Though... note to Fox, who's reportedly looking for suggestions to spice up next season to improve ratings. Compare the drama over how Eight Belles loss in the Kentucky Derby compares to your own contestants being voted off. Really no contest for the drama involved.

Just a little gallows humor to pass the remaining time filling in for an Idol season that seems destined to come down to David vs. David. Will no Goliath step the hell up?! Considering that "Goliath" in this case would have to be a
pretty black diva, or a dreadlocked tenor with big blue eyes, I'm skeptical.

Anyway tonight's theme was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Which apparently meant contestants could choose damn near any great song from the past they wanted, as long as it wasn't too current. Pretty consistent with the whole season's emphasis on the old, really. I'm alright with it when David Cook or Jason Castro rearrange things and make them sound current (which is all too rare in Jason's case, but does happen). Sayesha and David A. sound too frequently Glee Club over this sort of stuff. But Sayesha has been improving lately and David A. never gets serious criticism regardless so we'd just have to wait and see what turned up.

Each contestant sang two songs, and the judges gave their normal "right after each performance" critiques, so as not to confuse Paula once again. Though frankly, based on their comments, all the judges seemed more confused than usual anyway. The contestants once again sang two songs apiece, but had to cut them down to about 90 second arrangements as a result. Not an ideal compromise but, eh. On to the recaps....

Yes, I have to admit, not a good week for Jason. Possibly for the reasons you stated above. He should have knocked Tamborine Man out of the park!

And your comments about Archie, is how i've felt since week one when he did "Stop in the name of Love!"...

Anyways, what is scary, is I said Exactly what you did about Cook's Baba O'Reilly. Just when it was ready to explode, time ran out :) Time didn't give justice to the slow, low intro he gave the song. Otherwise Best of the Night. I've been waiting for him to do "the who", albeit I was hoping for Behind Blue Eyes. [it's tough to get an Anthem past the judges] - He could so nail the song when it changes...

As far as the 4 finalist "Jinx"; It definitely would point to Cook and not because of his "daughtry like presence", but because he should make it to the top 2. But, things are definitely different this season, and in that season, Elliot had one of his BEST, the 4th final week, and Daughtry was kind of weak[sunglasses and all ]...I always felt, it should have been Taylor Vs. Elliot that season.

I'm guessing Jason should be gone. I think it'll come down more to did Brookes votes go more for Girl Power, or similar stylings.
I think the surprise will be IF, syesha makes it to the top 2.
As far as your Goliath analogy aren't the DAVIDS really the Goliaths, and Syesha/Jason the DAVIDS.

One thing i forgot about. RE: David Cook. "Hungry Like the Wolf" is my absolute favorite video EVER. It's the reason, i ever watched videos. "Scout's honor." Anyways, it was just a poor choice of songs to pick. I don't think rearranging it, would have helped. That song, seemed to have been written solely for a video accompaniement, and I think stylizing would have fallen flat.

Well Mindy, you officially spooked me about losing David Cook. But thankfully nothing that crazy happened.

The David/Goliath hybrids should easily make the top two now unless something really shocking happens next week. I don't think another bout of crying on stage will be enough for Sayesha to overcome their considerable followings. Plus among the remaining three she's actually the least consistent.

So what were your personal favorite Jason Castro performances of the season Mindy (or anyone else who cares to chime in)? I know you were a fan. Mine were "Halleluia" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," but those are pretty obvious picks. Have any others to mention?

I have to agree with the Halleluia and Rainbow pix. Those were phenomenal. His "Daydreamin' boy, made me a fan. I think though, 'Forever in Blue Jeans', was #4, the more I watch that one, the more i like it.

Last night, he made me laugh, a lot. did you catch his Abbey Road impression at "Cirque Du Soleil".

On the 'Scary' front, I started watching AI, because of seeing Bo's Whipping Post. I caught only the end of that episode, waiting for House to start and was BLOWN away by that performance. The only other time, i'd been that amazed by a performance, was by Eddie Vedder's version of "Masters Of War"[ which is absolutely phenomenal ]

MY RANT: Of ALL THE SONGS FROM THE STEELY DAN SONGBOOK, WHY, OH WHY "reeling in the years". Now, once upon a time, i really, really liked the song, BUT radio stations have decided it's the ONLY song that's safe to play, so, I'm now so "Over" it....I will say, it would have been interesting for David Cook to do a Steely Dan tune.

Quick top 5 of All seasons:

bo bice, whipping post
constantine, [ i hate to admit it ] bohemian rhapsody
jason : Hallelujah
Kim L. : New York State Of Mind [ i wish they'd do billy again ]
Daughtry: Renegade
Beat Boxer : Time Of the Season.
