Subtitle: The Judges and Producers Quit Meandering And Flat Out Demand You Vote For David Archuleta
It's been a great Idol Season. Yes, I know, some of you have decided to introduce your own mass histrionics into the proceedings to showcase how this is some AWFUL turn from the Idol you all have loved. Trust me... the producers love it. Attention, attention, attention.

Which is not to say a few stress fractures haven't appeared in the Idol franchise this year. The fact remains, it's darned entertaining television. Also it's not the audience's problem if the eventual winner can't sell more than a few dozen records after the show. We tend to pick the Idol who makes the best television, not the best records. Gee, I wonder why?
But this finale had a little different feel for a number of reasons. It was like everything of Idol past meeting all the Idol "new" they unleashed this season, with allowing more of the "artist" crowd in... the kind of singers who can play their own instruments and write and arrange songs.
And while David Archuleta proved he knows his way around a piano keyboard, he definitely represents Idol past. He's a big-voiced non-threatening balladeer. The show was built to look for this type, and David Archuleta may represent the pinnacle of this style. He's been performing in reality shows like this since he was twelve. This is his life.
Then there's David Cook, representing the new breed. He had a prior (teeny-tiny and independent) record deal once. He's performed professionally - but in bars, not on tours. He breaks the form one expects from Idol, and yet there he is on their stage.
A truly interesting show down in the finale...
So of course the judges all went into the tank for the easily marketable and controllable kid, just like they'd been pimping all season. Lordy. If I didn't get a serious kick out of the cheesy way Idol is so wantonly market-driven I would be pissed. As it is I simply must laugh and shake my head that I ever thought it might be otherwise. Of course the producers want Archie to win. They hadn't exactly been subtle about it previously. And tonight was obviously the night to pull out all the stops toward that end. And good lord did they try.
So we're just going to ignore what the judges said tonight, because it didn't really correspond to the quality of any of the performances. They want you to vote for David Archuleta was the message. But I'd rather talk about who's performances were better.
Performance recaps after the jump:
Round 1:
These were songs chosen by Clive "older than dirt" Davis. Way to stay current, Idol! Clive chose a song from the 70's for Archie, and went all the way to the mid 80's for the more "contemporary" David Cook. Cook was 5 years old when Clive's song choice for him was released. Archie wouldn't be born for another 8 years from then. Not good signs.
David Cook opened with "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," by U2. He didn't take great liberties with the arrangement, but it wasn't a clone of the original either. He expressed his basic style pretty effectively but didn't really bring the house down with it. The David Cook problem is... he's dazzled too often. When he performs people kind of sit on their hands waiting for THE moment... and they're thinking of something amazing and new. He didn't really do that here. It was a nice, solid version of the song establishing a style which would stand in striking contrast the to syrupy ballads coming from the other contestant tonight.
David Archuleta followed that with "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me." In contrast to David C., he struggled at the opening of this song. Much like other times this season, he only really sounded good once he got past the low-register intro and into the belting-ballad part of the song. And gosh, he sounded great in that point except... well he ornamented the thing weirdly. Weirdly because it made no emotional sense when combined with the intent of the lyrics. Former Idol Clay Aiken made a huge impression with this song by nailing the emotion poignantly. That part was missing from this one. Regardless of the judges reaction, this was a second rate Clay Aiken, and not remotely a knock out.
Round One Winner: David Cook
Round Two:
The theme for this round was "The Crappy New Idol Songs Voted On The Web." This year they each got to choose their favorite rather than being stuck with the same one. Still... these are rarely good, and I wish they'd just lose this part altogether.
David Cook chose something called "Dream Big." It was alright. He arranged it in a nice radio-friendly alt-rock way, accompanying himself on his electric guitar. It was nice to see this side of David C., which was less the cover artist than the previous song came across as. This was a nice contemporary sound which he definitely pulled off well no matter what you think about the very ordinary song he was restricted to delivering. He also showed off more sides to his vocal range and performance style that he had in the prior song. He won no points with the judges for this, but then they insist David A. can sing the phone book over and over and no one else will ever compare.
David Archuleta came out with something called "In This Moment." Now this was the treacly Idol finale ballad we're used to hearing. And David A. delivered it with all the saccharine and cheese we're accustomed to. In short this was boring. It wasn't bad. But if you found it exciting or interesting you have a taste problem. I admit the kid's got talent. Now you admit the general public will never buy a record full of songs like this in great numbers, and that's one of the big reasons certain Idol winners struggle to catch on. If you think this year's Idol is supposed to be interchangeable with prior years Idols, this was the performance you preferred this round.
Round Two Winner: David Cook
Round Three:
Round Three allowed the contestants to choose any song they wanted. David Archuleta chose a song we'd already heard before and he was mucho-praised for. In other words, to no one's surprise, he made the quintessential
safe choice. David Cook chose a brand new song we'd never heard him try, by a band we'd never heard before on Idol. Just about the opposite direction.
David Cook closed with "The World I Know," by Collective Soul. Wow. What a direct challenge to the notion that Idol is actually interested in originality in their winners. For the record they're not. That's why they never got Daughtry. Hell, even Clay Aiken sued for independence. In other words every Idol producer hated this choice. You're not supposed to be trying new things at this point. You're supposed to be into marketing your product, dammit! Ergo, I just went into the tank for David Cook on principle here so objectivity goes out the window. Good show David Cook! May you go on to lose and use your resulting contractual independence to outsell the winner like so many of the best former Idols.
David Archuleta closed with "Imagine," and yada yada. I do think the kid has talent, but really... this song wouldn't be a hit on the radio right now. It's great in the context of this reality show. The way they overpraise this choice and this performance is symptomatic of the flaw in the Idol "hit" formula. Oh Archie will be a star - no doubt. Just not one who can reliably turn out hits, because he isn't becoming a star for that reason. He made the safe choice and went with one of his best songs of the season and made no challenging deviations from the version he delivered all those weeks ago. If he wins on this basis, it's because he's David Archuleta, not because of the song he sang. And that will be the burden faced by the people who end up trying to sell his songs post-Idol. I'd much rather be the one stuck selling his posters and ringtones than his songs.
That said... Round 3 Winner: David Archuleta. Gotta be honest here... I loved where Cook was coming from. But this is one on one competition. Archie picked his best.
Anyway, the overall impression of the night in my household was that David Cook is WAY better than David Archuleta as a performer. He has more range in style. He sounds more contemporary. He's far more adaptable. He's got far more creativity and originality....
So of course I think Archie is going to win. I've thought so all season, and have said it repeatedly. And tonight the judges going into full-press mode on behalf of Archie cemented the result in my mind. Pity though. David Cook is better in every way he can possibly control. And perhaps a loss would loosen the grip of Archie's crazy stage dad enough to allow him a little room to grow.
UPDATE: THE WINNER
First of all, let me just thank the producers to going back to that awesome performance-heavy, star-studded format from the Season Five finale, because last season's was a real let down. This one was a lot of fun.
Favorite moments: David Cook fronting for ZZ Top. The two Davids' duet on Nickelback's "Hero." Jason Castro's reprise of Hallelujah. Carly Smithson and Michale Johns duet on "The Letter." The Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. "Pips."
Least Favorite Moments: Donna Summer. The Jonas Brothers (granted, I'm not exactly their target demographic). Renaldo Lapuz. Amanda Overmyer suffering her way through the kitschy group numbers.
Finally we reached the result and ...

COOK wins American Idol! And it's not even very close! He won by 12 MILLION votes!
God Bless America! You surprised me and made the right choice!
American Idol Season Seven is history, and David Cook will be eternally etched into the Idol pantheon.
To add a little to your pre-amble, I'm just disappointed in the producers for not standing behind, what appeared to be a cognizant change in Idol. Look at the first season: Wardrobes/age/studio etc. to this season...It would appear that steps were taken to completed revamp the show; Make it appeal to an older crowd. And then when that happens, we're surprised at the changes in the demographics ????
Confusing.
Lastly, both Davids are already guaranteed a record deal. Nigel has said so. For David Cook, probably acknowledging that Archuleta is what the producer's wanted, seemed to play to his Fans. That's all he really needed to do. And it probably will show to have been a smart strategy.
When you listed the reasons that David C. is a better performer, you left out stage presence. Even after repeated instructions from Sir Andrew, David A. can't manage to keep his eyes open through an entire performance. Someone commented on another site that his lack of stage presence means that David A. won't be able to fall back on Broadway like so many other Idol alumni have; that sounds about right to me unless he acquires some performance chops during the tour.
Dial Idol has David C. way ahead. Dial Idol hasn't been all that accurate this year (at least when I've checked) but I would really enjoy seeing David C. win after the shameless way the judges pushed David A. at America last night.
1) Absolutely David Cook with ZZ Top!
2) David Cook and Guitar Hero...
3) Jimmy Kimmel
4) Glady's Night - It's all about Jack Black :)
5) Carrie - Last Name
6) Brooke duet with Nash ( although the beginning missed on the beautiful harmonizing, the ending with their distinctive voices was great )
7) Jason reprising Hallelujah
If I only had seen this show last year, these are things I would be thinking:
1) Michael Johns should have been in the final 2 with Cook. He sangs so well last night, and it became obvious, he just didn't know what songs to pick.
2) How did Archuleta make it to the final 2. He seemed so out of place at times.
Any thoughts on, the possibility that Simons disparaging comments and the unwarranted flaunting of Archuleta inspired Cook's fans to vote multiple times.
Mindy, I think the vote margin was big enough to rule out anything more than "David Cook was WAY more popular in the end." And while I shared the sentiment I didn't see that coming. So much for the vaunted Idol power of the texting generation.
Big agreement about Michael Johns by the way. He wanted sooo much to be a classic rocker. But he really shines in blue-eyed soul. It was his rocker song choices that doomed him. That arrangement of "The Letter" last night was a nice blend of the two, conjuring up Joe Cocker. And am I alone in thinking Carly and Michael make a great combo? They should do an album together. Or at least a couple of singles.
Big Question though: When Simon apologised to David, did he know the end result ????
Surprised you didn't get on me for not having "Unfaltering" dedication for Jason Castro. [ as good as Hallelujah was, he kind of flubbed Bryan Adams :) ]
I wouldn't say that. I was expecting David A. to win. But my pleasure in David C.'s win was multiplied several times because of my irritation at the way the judges behaved on Tuesday. You're probably right that the vote margin was wide enough that it didn't really matter, but I wonder if David C. picked up some additional votes from people who were are cheesed off as I was.
It took me about half a second after Ryan announced the winner for me to think that Simon had been tipped off and that's why he did the big-time backtracking. That probably makes me a cynic.
I doubt Simon knew the end result. I think he got caught up in the enthusiasm last night, and when he looked back at the tape he was a bit embarrassed because:
A. Archie's first performance wasn't all that good other than the glory notes he got to belt.
B. The middle Idol-contest number by Cook is WAY more current and marketable regardless of how well Archie sang the second one.
C. Telling Cook to play it safe and bring out a "greatest hits" performance in the final went against everything he'd been praising him for all season.
None of that added up remotely to an Archuleta knock-out, and he had to see that upon review.
And I don't think you're a sell-out on Jason Castro anyway, so I don't expect you to praise his less-than-stellar performances.
Mary Ann,
I'll bet it did earn Cook some extra votes, but probably not in the millions. It hurt the judges credibility though. And after this season's Paula-scandal they didn't really need that.
